Passion Flower GP - Research Brief:

Passion flower is one of the most popular natural relaxants.
Main passion flower active ingredients are: flavonoids (vitexine, kamferol, quercetin, rutin), alkaloid (harman, maltol, phytosterol, and etc.)
Pharmacological effect of passion flower is caused, basically, by flavonoid and alkaloid activity.

Flavonoids render spasmolytic, hypotensive, cardio and capillary toning, coronary vasodilating, antiarrhythmic, anti-oxidant action. (11)
Maltol possesses calming property.
Alkaloids demonstrate antispasmodic effect on smooth muscles, promote blood vessels dilatation, and decrease arterial pressure.
It is sugested that alkaloids (harman) are capable to inhibit monoamine oxidase enzyme, related to depression. This enzyme destroys neurotransmitters in the brain, especially dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin that influence mood stability. By inhibiting monoamine oxidase, neurotransmitters’ level raises, improving mood.

Though the mechanism of passion flower action is not completely studied, it is considered that active substances of this plant are raising neurotransmitter level in the brain - Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Gamma-aminobutyric acid reduces brain cells activity, causing relaxation, reducing nervousness and promots falling asleep.

European Herbal Pharmacopoeias recommend passion flower extract containing no less than 0.8% total flavonoids.
Passion Flower GP by Santegra® contains the standardized extract (4:1) of aerial parts with 3.5% vitexin flavonoid.
